Ancestry DNA Tests
Published on 14 Feb
Huge numbers of people have been taking DNA tests to discover their ancestry…already 26 million by 2019. The DNA databases held by the ancestry DNA testing companies are now enormous and together with other evidence (family trees and the like) allow distant relatives to be tentatively identified (half second cousin or closer).
This can lead to tricky discoveries about families, sometimes, welcome, sometimes not !
But, many people do not realise that there are several types of DNA test possible and each has a different purpose. If you want to determine or confirm a biological relationship, then you need a STR based test for the following relationships; paternity, maternity, auntie, uncle, grand- parentage, sibling or half sibling. The most conclusive results, will always come from parentage testing that is; paternity (father) and maternity (mother).
If you find a possible relative using an ancestry DNA test and would like confirmation, then please contact us and we would be happy to discuss the scenario with you.
Interestingly, some of the big ancestry DNA testing companies are downsizing, as the early adopters are getting fewer in number. They are looking for new opportunities and this might be DNA tourism, where individuals follow up their ancestry DNA test results and visit the countries and regions of their genetic origin, in order to cement the connection to their biological roots!
